Smitten Kitten Saturday // 25

Happy Saturday, babes!

I thought I’d be waking up in Toronto this morning, after having my sleeve finished last night. Unfortunately a few of the inks my artist needed were backordered (my sleeve takes all the colours) and my trip had to be delayed. I’m okay having the time at home though. I’ll probably poke around my room to continue purging and cleaning up before my move. I’m a little bit overwhelmed that I have just over two weeks left to get everything in order, but I know it will all come together . In the mean time, I have a great roundup of links for you today. Grab a cuppa and dive into this week’s awesome internet finds…

1 2Cindy’s pop culture watercolours are so good. (via Neon Rattail)

3Brain Pickings posted an amazing series of posters illustrated by Maurice Sendak.

4The world’s largest cave is in Vietnam and was only discovered four years ago. For the first time, tourists are going to be able to visit it. These photos are breathtaking, but would you be up for the journey?

5 6Katie’s embellished watercolours always make me so happy (you should follow her on Instagram).

7I love, love, love black and white photographs – especially of the grainy, vintage variety. But it is pretty neat to see these 20 historical b&w photographs colourized.

8The story behind ‘The Catabomb Saints’ is as incredible as their bejewelled remains.

9Beets are my favourite. I can’t wait to try this three beet salad.

10I’m obsessed with this pink swing jacket. Unfortunately it’s too teeny for me.

11A great web comic.

12Macabre interpretations of classic Disney movies.

13Classical sculptures dressed as hipsters look contemporary and totally badass.”

And a few links…

Free ebook: 50 resources for writers.
Should I turn my passion into a job?
Caitlin Moran’s posthumous advice to her daughter.
The making of one of my favourite songs: London Calling.

So tell me, what’s the best thing you’ve found online this week?

Today was pretty much a perfect Saturday.

My mom and I headed out early for coffee and croissants at the farmers’ market – a weekly ritual I’d been sorely missing. It was my first day back at the shop after being away at the cottage. I’ve only got a couple of shop girl weekends left, so I was feeling really nostalgic. There were so many beautiful new pieces in and there were people in and out all afternoon. I love busy days, because the time always seems to go by faster. In between helping customers I was re-doing the jewelry display, which meant combing through sparkly treasures – totally my cup of tea! I’ve been unusually exhausted lately, so after dinner I stayed in and watched How to Marry a Millionaire with my mom while working on a craft project. What a silly movie! Thank goodness not as many people these days think that getting married is “the biggest thing you can do in life.” I did enjoy some of the old dresses though. Now I’m snuggling in bed with Henry, cueing up an episode of Sons of Anarchy before I go to sleep. But first, onto some of my favourite posts that I found this week…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis tea set!

2This photo of Kate is so much fun.

3This makeup is making me seriously reconsider my Halloween costume idea (via Emma Deer).

4Heather Hansen’s series Emptied Gestures captures movement on paper. Beautiful, right?

5These Sophia Webster shoes would add a great pop of colour and kitsch to an LBD.

6“Photographer Martin Klimas is behind this fascinating series called Rapid Bloom where he drops flowers into liquid nitrogen and then shoots them with an air gun from behind. Klimas wanted to show the flower, in its entirety, in one single shot, a flower in full bloom turned into a fascinating piece of abstract art.” (via MyModernMet)

7Next time I visit Paris, I need to find this colourful street.

8Incredible.

9Raw, cheesy kale crackers.

redlipsI’m sharing Smitten Kitten Saturday in a different format today. I slept in a bit today, and I couldn’t stand the thought of another morning spent wrestling with the Internet here, trying to get a bunch of images to load. But I did spend one drizzly afternoon combing through my ‘to read’ bookmarks folder and clearing out my BlogLovin’ feed, so I do have quite a bit to share. Oftentimes there are links I don’t post because they aren’t very visual and now they’re getting their time to shine. So, pull up a chair, wrap your hand around a mug of something hot, and get reading…

The limits of Mad Men’s analog world“Don Draper operates like a real modern artist, without numbers, graphs, or computers limiting or guiding him in any way.”

A prominent design blogger asks, “How can I encourage readers – and myself – to live a life filled with more authenticity than stuff?”

Alex’s first tattoo.

11 important life lessons I learned from Clueless. (via @yesandyes)

Why the smartphone changed photography forever. “Your equipment no longer defines you, your photographs do. Professional photographer or not, whether you shoot on an iPhone, a Sony RX1, or a Leica M6, it’s the creativity with which you take and share the pictures that matters to me, not the camera.”

Digital disciplines for creating a healthy relationship with the Internet.

How to wear a maxi skirt.

The skinny on sponsored posts.

5 things you should know about tattoos“I hate to break it to you but every decision in life is permanent…you just can’t see all of them.  You can’t go back in time and unread this post or go to bed earlier last night.  You can’t undo anything that you’ve already done.  The only difference is that a tattoo can be seen.”

1967 aerial footage of London.

Do you have a to-don’t list?

The acclaimed documentary, The Hour of the Wolf: The Eye Has to Travel, about pioneering fashion editor Diane Vreeland is now available in full on YouTube.

A roundup of exceptional podcasts.

Is Instagram making you depressed?

Selfies in serious places (oh, dear!)

A playlist inspired by the Greek Islands.

So, what do you think of Smitten Kitten Saturday in this different format? Do you prefer the graphic-heavy roundups? Do a lot of links make your life better? Would some combination of the two make your heart sing loudest? Let me know in the comments!

I wasn’t going to post Smitten Kitten Saturday this week, because I haven’t been online enough to have much to show off. But I realized my Etsy favourites treasury is full of vintage treasures and handmade gems, so I thought I’d share some of those along with a few great posts I have seen on the blogosphere lately. Take a look and let me know which is your favourite…

1This Peter Pan pendant is made from a print of an intricate papercut image. How beautiful!

3I’ve been lusting after this Chantilly lace cropped bolero jacket from the 1950s and then scolding myself for even thinking about buying it (a girl who’s moving across the world does not need another item of clothing). I found a similar, full length piece in a vintage shop by the cottage where we’re staying and ended up taking it home, so this one is still available for you to purchase!

4A pretty clutch.

5A nerdy t-shirt that’s right up my alley.

6My best friend designed an amazing line of handprinted dresses. This is one of my faves.

7I am not thinking about getting engaged, but how’s that for a sparkler?!

8A charming (and inspirational) laptop decal.

And a few non-Etsy finds…

2Elsie’s inspiring me to make my own studded bracelets.

9As usual, the photos from Sarah’s circus act are absolutely awe-inspiring.

Macklemore’s collaboration with Ryan Lambert gives me all the feelings. Isn’t it a wonderful anthem for equality?

11NoiseTrade offers completely free, legal downloads of full albums. This week they introduced me to Canon Blue and I’m completely smitten with the band’s orchestral pop sound. You can listen to & download their album here.

On that musical note, you may have noticed I haven’t been posting Music Monday lately. For now, I’ll be sharing my favourite new (to me) tracks in these posts, with a few playlists and music-related posts thrown in from time to time.

Phew! That sure a lot longer than usual to put together with our slower than molasses internet connection up here. I hope you enjoyed it! What wonderful things have you found online this week? I’ll be sure to check them out when I get home.

Wishing you a sparkly Saturday,

I’ve set myself a tall  to-do list for today, including picking up fabric for a few new projects, bleaching my roots, working on an article and my professional web site, and that’s on top of working at the shop all afternoon and having dinner with my fam jam. Phew! Wish me luck ;) But first, I’m sitting down with a giant mug of cappuccino flavoured yerba mate to share a handful of awesome things I found online this week. There are some real gems in there, so take a peek!

1Amen.

3I have wild rice sprouting as I type to try out Sarah’s latest creation.

2This dress basically encapsulates everything I’m going for style-wise right now.

4It wasn’t posted in time to include in my apartment DIY roundup, but I’d love to give Emma and Elsie’s DIY photo clock a try.

5The photographs in the new issue of Tinsel Tokyo are fantastic.

6I discovered Leloo’s blog and I’m obsessed with her style (& her Parisian life).

11I’ve decided I must have this mojito green juice for breakfast tomorrow. Perfect.

7 8Ashkahn makes amazing greeting cards.

8Melanie posted free “important truths” iPhone backgrounds. I have this one set for my lock screen right now.

9Best temporary tattoos ever.

10Lyzi’s new recipe combines three of my favourite things: coffee, whiskey, & cupcakes. <3

Over six months my friend Robyn traveled to 17 countries and took 6,000 photographs. This is what she saw.

This
is beautiful (get ready to tear up).

New hero.

What’s the absolute, bestest, must-see thing you found online this week? Or what’s your favourite thing you posted or created? (Maybe I can work it into next week’s list).

Enjoy the sunshine!
